Binance Breached in $6.3B Crypto Hack
Though this is by far the largest, the cascade of recent hacks should serve as a warning to everyone, whether they hold cryptocurrency or not.
Binance says a security breach affected approximately $6.3 billion in assets, with about $3 billion frozen so far through work with its partners. The cryptocurrency exchange has pledged to cover all losses using its emergency protection fund and corporate funds. The investigation is ongoing, and frozen assets should not be confused with money already recovered.
Preliminary findings point to a compromised employee laptop as a possible entry point. Binance says it has found no evidence that the private keys controlling its cryptocurrency wallets were exposed, but a full account of the attack is still pending. Deposits have resumed, while withdrawals remain suspended during security upgrades. The company expects to restore withdrawals within 48 hours. North Korea is suspected, and that shouldn't be a surprise. They've been at this a long time.
There is no established link between this attack and AI. But the cascade and scale of recent hacks and reported vulnerabilities should serve as a warning to everyone, whether they hold cryptocurrency or not. AI is only going to make it even easier for attackers to find weaknesses, deceive people and operate at greater scale. We are already struggling to protect systems that underpin our finances and daily lives. Consider this another warning that the threats are likely going to grow faster than our ability to defend against them.
